Mykonos

In the small Cycladic series of islands called in the Aegean Sea lays the tiny gem of Mykonos Island - a dreamy destination. Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan islands in the world. The islands capital town is Chora also recognized as Little “Venice”. Mykonos is a wonderful kaleidoscope of cosmopolitan shops, windmills, homey taverns and hidden churches. Every house, each restaurant and tavern, windmill and each of the innumerable churches is immaculately whitewashed, with doorframes and window shutters highlighted with splashes of sky blue and jade green. The streets are a maze of narrow, winding paved stone alleyways - many only two or four feet wide- overhung with dazzling pink and purple blossoms. On every second doorstep sits a cat, gazing down serenely at passers by. There is the loveliest traditional fishing harbor with boats, sailing boats, fishing-boats of every color, truly delightful and just the right place to have a long walk. On the right of the harbor the houses come right down to the sea's edge. Furthermore, Mykonos offers fine dining, miraculous beaches, beautiful sunsets and a famous nightlife. On the south shore placed are the most popular beaches that enchant visitors with perfectly fine sand and crystal like water truly ultimate for swimming. Ornos and Psarou beaches are the favorite among families, but Psarou is also ideal for water sports of all kinds including windsurfing, water-skiing and diving. Paradise and Super Paradise beaches attract the young and beautiful while the quiet cove at Agrari beach is the place to relax.

Activity

Hatha-Yoga originated in India 5.500 years ago. The word yoga means union and thus means the integration of the body, the mind, and the soul. Yoga is not a religion, but could be best described as an art, a philosophy and a way of living that could easily be integrated into our hectic Western lifestyle. The micro-purpose of yoga is to strengthen and stretch the body through physical postures to gain flexibility, while the macro-purpose of yoga is to attain an overall understanding of ourselves and therefore gain clarity of mind and through meditation understand our place in the universe. Practicing the Hatha-Yoga lifestyle improves the quality of life.

Not to miss on the island

Delos

Delos is a small low island with an area of 3,43 square km, lying to the southwest of Mykonos. Chosen by the ancients as their religious center, the small island gradually became covered with temples, mansions, markets, stadiums and shops therefore grew to also a cultural and commercial center. The period of its greatest glory was followed by inevitable decline -wars, ruin and destruction. Today the island is a piece of land covered with ruins: fallen columns, sections of famous mosaics, a stadium and tiers of seats from a theatre and also wrestling schools. Among this mass of ruins, five marble lions in a row still stand. These were the guardians of the sacred lake –they still gaze out to the east, waiting for the rising of the sun, the sun of God Apollo.

Paraportiani Church

The most photographed monument on the island (and one of the most photographed churches in the world) is Paraportiani church. It is conjectured that the complex was built gradually during the 16th and the 17th century, but most likely even earlier. Its interior ornamentation is not of real importance but it is of major architectural importance. It is an inspired architectural complex of five churches. Four of them are on the ground and one on the roof, elevated, that being Paraportiani itself. The ground floor of the complex consists of Agios Efstathios, to the east, touching on two of the three churches built in a line: Agioi Anargyroi, the oldest, in the middle, and Agios Sozontas to the west. To the south the chapel of Agia Anastasia touches on Agioi Anargyroi.

“Venice” of Mykonos

Near the village Alevkandra the image that unfolds before you is like nowhere else in Greece. It is one of the prettiest corners of the island, the neighborhood with its houses right in the sea, the famous "Venice" (Venetia) of Mykonos. Houses built over the sea with polychrome porches, balconies, windows, doors and stairways, wooden terraces under which the waves break, lend a special flavor to this part of Mykonos. It is the neighborhood beloved of artists, many of whom have immortalized it in striking paintings, thus in their own way contributing to the spread of the island's fame.

Windmills

The numerous windmills constitute one of the symbols of the island. Pure-white, circular, with a conical wooden roof, they sprang to life with the wind that blew (and still does) 200 to 300 days a year. From wherever you are, you can see their silhouette, either on the heights above Chora or on the level area near Alevkantra. These important structures for the grinding of agricultural products numbered 16 in the past and were all in operation.

Nightlife

Each year both famous and ordinary people turn up on this island from all over the world. The most celebrated events, parties and the happenings which occur every summer attract all people and stand as reasons for them visiting Mykonos to begin with.

Pelican

An inseparable part of life on the harbor is the pelican, the island's mascot. It wanders through all the neighborhoods around but prefers the harbor and Alevkantra.

It is so sweet, beloved and looked after by everyone, locals and foreigners. It is also a typical feature of Mykonos life.

Food and wine..

We have carefully selected the food and the wine for this trip, excellent taverns and restaurants with local traditional food and wine of very high quality. The island's cuisine, dependent on locally grown products, fish and seafood from the Aegean Sea, makes it truly delicious and also healthy.

The island produces especially outstanding dry white wines (a wide choice of over sixty local brands), dry red wine (in very small quantities) and sweet dessert wines (vinsanto). Do not neglect to try them at the restaurants, the local wineries, the coffee shops and the bars of the island.
